How do you color glass?

There are several ways to color glass.

The first is direct coloring , which means that dyes based on metal oxides are added which absorb certain wavelengths of light.

The intensity and tone of the coloring depend on the nature and quantity of the oxides added as well as the composition of the glass itself (sodium or potassium).

For example, to obtain blue , we will add cobalt oxide, for yellow, chrome and/or silver, for red , copper oxide.

The second method is indirect coloring.

The coloration appears when the glass is heated to around 600°C. Some oxides are suspended in the vitreous mass during melting . The heat therefore highlights the intrinsic color of the glass.
